Common Skin Myths Debunked by a Pakistani Dermatologist
پاکستانی ماہرِ جلد کی نظر میں جھوٹے خیالات
In the age of social media, skin care advice is everywhere. Unfortunately, much of it is scientifically inaccurate and can cause actual harm to your skin barrier. Let's debunk six of the most common skincare myths seen in dermatology clinics.
Myth 1: Toothpaste Dries Out Pimples
The Truth: Toothpaste contains harsh ingredients like baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, and alcohol. While it might dry out a pimple, it will also severely irritate the surrounding skin, causing redness, peeling, and sometimes post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (dark spots). Always use a formulated salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide spot treatment instead.
Myth 2: Oily Skin Doesn't Need Moisturizer
The Truth: Dehydrated skin often overcompensates by producing more oil. If you strip your oily skin with harsh cleansers and skip moisturizer, you will likely end up oilier than before. The key is choosing the right product: opt for lightweight, non-comedogenic gel moisturizers formulated with hyaluronic acid or ceramides.
Myth 3: 'Natural' Always Means Safe
The Truth: Poison ivy is 100% natural, but you wouldn't rub it on your face. Essential oils, lemon juice, and raw physical exfoliants like walnut scrubs can cause severe contact dermatitis, micro-tears in the skin, and extreme photosensitivity. Lab-formulated, clinically tested synthetic ingredients are often much safer and more stable.
Myth 4: A High SPF Means You Are Protected All Day
The Truth: No matter if you wear SPF 30 or SPF 100, sunscreen breaks down under UV exposure and your skin's natural oils. It must be reapplied every two to three hours when outdoors. High SPF only indicates slightly higher protection from UVB rays, not a longer duration of protection.
Myth 5: Expensive Skincare is Always Better
The Truth: You do not need a 20,000 PKR face cream for good skin. The efficacy of a product comes down to its active ingredients (like retinol, vitamin C, or niacinamide) and its formulation, not its marketing budget or packaging. Many highly effective dermatological brands are very affordable.
Myth 6: You Only Need Sunscreen When It's Sunny
The Truth: Up to 80% of the sun's UV rays can pass through clouds. UVA rays (which cause aging and pigmentation) can also pass right through glass windows. Sunscreen is a daily necessity, 365 days a year, regardless of the weather.
